What is the process of creating a ceramic piece from start to finish?
The process begins with preparing the clay by wedging to remove air bubbles. Next, the clay is shaped by hand-building or wheel throwing. Once formed, the piece is left to dry until it’s leather-hard, meaning firm but still workable. At this stage, you can trim, add handles, or carve decorations. The piece then dries completely to a bone-dry state before bisque firing. After the first firing, it’s ready for glazing. Glaze is applied by dipping, brushing, or spraying. The glazed piece is fired again in a glaze firing. Once cooled, the piece is inspected and cleaned if necessary. The entire process can take 1–3 weeks depending on drying and firing schedules. Every step contributes to the strength, beauty, and uniqueness of the final piece.
